Os eleitores paraenses decidiram, em plebiscito realizado neste domingo (11), manter o Estado unido e negaram a divisão territorial para criação dos Estados de Carajás e Tapajós. Com isso, o Brasil continuará com 26 Estados, além do Distrito Federal. Por volta de 20h30, 87,74% dos votos haviam sido apurados: 67,43% dos eleitores votaram contra criação de Carajás e 66,87%, de Tapajós.
Essa foi a primeira vez na história do país que a população foi consultada, por meio de um plebiscito, sobre a divisão de um Estado. A última unidade da federação criada no Brasil foi o Tocantins, em 1988, mas a decisão foi do Congresso Nacional, sem passar pelos eleitores de Goiás –que teve a parte norte desmembrada.
The constituents from the state of Pará have decided in a referendum last Sunday to keep the state united and have denied the territorial division for the creation of the new states of Carajás and Tapajós. Brazil will therefore continue having 26 states plus the Federal District. By 8:30 p.m. Brasilia time 87.74% of votes had been counted, 67.43% of which were against the creation of Carajás and 66.87% against Tapajós.
This was a one time referendum in the history of the country to decide about the division of a state. The last unit of the Brazilian federation to be created was the state of Tocantins, in 1988, by grace of the Senate, though, without a referendum by the voters of the state of Goiás, who saw the northern part of their state be eventually severed.
